SMSC (Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Development), British Values, and Cultural Capital

At The Meadows School, SMSC, British Values, and Cultural Capital are at the heart of our curriculum. We ensure that every learner — regardless of need or starting point — has access to experiences that are personalised, purposeful, and inclusive, supporting them to become confident, resilient, and well-prepared for life beyond school.

SMSC at The Meadows

  • Spiritual: Opportunities for reflection, self-awareness, and curiosity about the world.
  • Moral: Learning about right and wrong, fairness, respect, and empathy.
  • Social: Building relationships through structured play, peer support, collaboration, and community engagement.
  • Cultural: Exploring stories, art, RE, music, and celebration days from a wide range of backgrounds and traditions.

British Values

We actively promote the fundamental British Values of:

  • Democracy – pupils are encouraged to share their views, make choices, and participate in pupil voice activities such as school council.
  • Rule of Law – understanding the importance of rules and routines to keep everyone safe and respected.
  • Individual Liberty – supporting pupils to make safe, informed choices, develop independence, and build confidence in their identity.
  • Mutual Respect – valuing themselves and others, encouraging kindness, respect, and cooperation.
  • Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs – exploring cultural and religious traditions through RE, celebration days, visitors, and community links.

These values are woven into everyday routines, lessons, and enrichment opportunities, and are taught in ways that are meaningful and accessible to our learners.

Cultural Capital

We build learners’ cultural capital by providing experiences that broaden horizons, deepen knowledge, and develop curiosity. This includes:

  • Visits to local places of interest and community engagement.
  • Opportunities to work with visitors and outside groups.
  • Themed events, arts, and sensory experiences.
  • Celebrating diversity and inclusion in developmentally appropriate ways.

Our Aim

Through SMSC, British Values, and Cultural Capital, we help pupils to:

  • Develop curiosity and appreciation of diversity.
  • Gain the confidence and resilience to engage in new experiences.
  • Build the knowledge and skills they need to thrive now and in adult life.
